MovieFest 2004 :: It's Back - NZ First Short Movie Competition

What is MovieFest?

The aim of MovieFest is to encourage the movie makers of New Zealand and to promote and showcase the talent New Zealand has to offer. We aim to stimulate the use of digital video editing tools and to foster the use of computers for digital video editing. We screen the entrants’ work nationwide in an effort to encourage and inspire moviemakers and to give them the feedback from their peers and the general public, as well as from our professional judges. We aim to promote excellence in artistic expression by rewarding creativity, technical achievement and innovation.

By focusing the competition towards Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Hobbyists, we try to encourage the development of NZ movie making talent by providing resources and facilitating help and advice from professionals experienced in their field. We're all about assisting in the development of New Zealand's creative movie-makers and exposing them to the nation at large. If you're a seasoned Movie-maker, then we'd encourage you to 'give back' and get involved - either by entering yourself - or by helping the team, pop over to the Discussions email List or the Forums

The top four movies in each of the three categories were appraised by a panel of judges, all seasoned professionals in the film and video industries. An overall best movie was selected and as their prize, the team making the movie toured a number of the film making facilities responsible for making the Lord of the Rings and King Kong films.

The public screenings and Awards Ceremony for the competition was held in Upper Hutt’s Genesis Theatre in Fergusson Drive on Saturday 27th October, 2007. The screenings of the movies commenced at 10:00am, 11:40am and 1:30pm and the Awards Ceremony commenced at 3:30pm and ran until 5pm.

Phill Simmonds of the Simmonds Brothers Animation Studio, who have just completed a short animated movie that has been entered for selection in the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in the United States, gave a presentation during the Awards Ceremony of the process involved in the making of their movies.

Additionally, Carol Bean, a well known and popular musician resident in Wellington, talked about and performed two of her own songs, 'Freeze Frame' and 'Eastbourne Jetty' that have recently been picked for the sound track of a Hollywood movie called ‘Player 5150’.
